Learn Hindi from Akhlesh.com

Your comments/feedback/suggestions on my site www.akhlesh.com

Monday, October 24, 2005

Hi friends

The site www.akhlesh.com is intended to help people learn elementary Hindi. It was originally created to help parents staying outside India to teach Hindi to their kids, as elementary Hindi books are not available to them. Over time I have also added stuff for other type of users like foreign visitors to learn basic Hindi phases, that will be useful when they visit India.
I am constantly looking for ideas to help you, so let me know what do you think about my attempt and your suggestions.

    Namaste Akhilesh ji,

I have been teaching Hindi in the Bay Area in USA for last 20 years. I have developed lot of my own material also, but I am continuously changing it, and looking for new material and ideas.
Your charts will definitely come in handy for me. Yes, you will credit for your work.
I am starting story time for preschool students at our local library. I would love to see story books with that age group in mind. One or two simple lines per page with nice picture/illustration on good quality paper and binding.
I would love to see these in local libraries and bookstores throughout USA.
I have started developing some of my own also, but it will be great to see more of this.

    Hi,

I'm a Kathak dance student in Toronto, Canada. Many of the dancers at our school have no Indic language background but we use Hindi and Sanskrit terms ,dance and table bols, song lyrics and poems all the time so we are all trying to learn. Its hard to find very beginning level reading material here so this is a great place resource for us.

    Hi,

Great website! I ran into it while trying to find something to keep my 7yr old occupied - She currently attends hindi classes and we buy writing/reading material in India when we travel but your website it's a great resource for those who don't have that. It allowed me to give her something to practice while not in the usual setting -- I just wished I had found it earlier. I would only ask that you do add the numbers and colors like some other people have mentioned. Great job!

Your website is really useful for the parents both who knows hindi or not.

So who don't know hind at all they also learn the same quite easily.

I am also requesting you, please prepare a portal for English language also for parents like me. I don't know English very well.

    please reply a line.

    Aklesh,

Very good attempt. I have 2 kids aged 10 and 5 for whom I'm looking for resources to teach Hindi. Since I myself don't know Hindi, I'm also looking to learn along.

    Couple of ideas:

    1. MP3 for the all words, poems, text whereever relevant
    2. Some simple games that they can play match words to pictures etc
    3. Conversational Hindi unit - as that's what is most of the time missing in any of the online-tutorials. "Door to Hindi" if you search in Google, has Taj Afroz's online tutorial. But since that's targetting mostly adults, some ideas can be picked from there for teaching kids too.

    Thanks,
    Keerthana.

Great site. You have put so much into it. thanks a lot. Only one thing, I would like to have it with some sound. I am a working mother and barely have time to sit with them for too long. I really like my kids to learn hindi as it is my mother language. if there is any way you can add some sound, so if preschoolers click on the alphabet they can hear the sound, and learn.
    thx a lot any way.

    Excellent site, Akhlesh.
It is well designed, and very useful. Good work!

Just as you have audio files for poems, it would be a rather good idea to include audio files for pronunciation.
In many cases, even the parents are not native Hindi speakers, but want their children to learn the language. An audio guide to pronunciation would be immeasurably useful.

In the common words section, you have "Tumhara naam kya hai" with the "ai" sounding like the a in bad. May I suggest the ai sounds like the ai in hair instead? Sounds very strange to say like a in bad.

But... if "bad" is said with a strong Indian accent then yes it works well! :-)

    Hi Akhleshji,
This is a great effort. I am a mother of a 2 year old and have neem constantly looking for hindi material online.
I feel that we lack a very good collection of audio/video material in hindi for little kids.
I feel ashamed after looking at the wonderful materials avialble in english. Why we with our so rich culture have never thought of making some great collections.
I am even thinking of making sokme good audio material for the coming genration...like rhymes in hindi with good music.
And I really get inspiration from people like you who sincerely do some great work towards forwarding hindi.
Let me know if you have any good thoughts about this also.
And I salute your efforts for this site. Its great!

I have a LARGE extended family that puts a heavy emphasis on education. we use a combination of traditional schooling, homeschooling resources, and private tutors. My family is originally from South Asia but we do not speak much Hindi and we sure can't write it. We tried to find a tutor for twice weekly lessons for all of our kids, but had no luck in finding anyone. This is hands down the best thing i have found on the internet to help them to learn. We will visit frequently and would love to see more! Any other moms in similar situation that would care to chat, email me at alabasterfreak@yahoo

You've also given me some direction to keep my son's enthusiasm up!

    Dear Akhlesh,

Thank you very much! Now living in the Netherlands I try picking up my roots, my grandparents migrated from India to South America more than 80 years ago.
Is it possible to translate the hindi words that you use to learn the alphabet in english as well.
    Thank you very much.
    kind regards,

Thanks a lot for great effort. It helped a lots of parents like us. the content is very helpful teaching hindi for my son and he loved it a lot.

    Namaste Akhleshji,

I found your link on ISpeakHindi.com.

I think your site is very well presented, really, and yours is one of the most orderly and clear to follow. I very much agree about including audio. It is essential, especially for people like myself who come from the West (Australia)and need to hear again and again the pronunciation from different native speakers.
    Thank you for your help.

This is a great site as I was looking for resources to help my kids learn hindi.
Do you also have ideas on some good hindi movies that would help the kids learn about our history, culture & values?
